I get why people think this book has a depressing nature because the boy always takes then leaves the tree lonely but the last time he comes he stays with the tree and they both die of old age.
Well, I guess that's one way to put it, but WHAT CAN YOU GIVE A TREE?!? It seems unfair to not give something in return, but you ca't really give a tree anything besides carbon dioxide.
